Zespri® Kiwifruit BBQ Sauce
- 45ml olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 6 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 1 ½ tbsp finely grated ginger
- 4 Zespri® SunGold Kiwifruit, peeled and pureed
- 2 x 410g cans chopped tomatoes
- 125ml dark brown sugar
- 60ml worchester sauce
- 60ml soy sauce
- 10ml black treacle syrup
- 1½ tbsp smoked paprika
- 2 tsp Chinese 5-spice powder
1 litre, ⏲ 1½ hours
In a large heavy-based pot, heat olive oil and fry onion over medium-high heat until soft and translucent. Add garlic and ginger and continue to fry, stirring often, until it starts to catch on the bottom and the edges turn golden brown.
Add kiwifruit puree, tomatoes, sugar, worchester sauce, soy sauce, treacle syrup, smoked paprika and 5-spice powder. Stir well, then turn heat to low and simmer covered for 20-30 minutes, stirring every now and then. Remove from heat and transfer to a glass jar. Keep refrigerated until needed.
Use on pork roasts, ribs, braai chops, steaks, chicken and burgers.
